IP65, IP66 or IP67? A Short Selection Guide to Plastic Junction Boxes

Oct. 09, 2026

Most junction box failures in the field are selection failures, not manufacturing failures. Here is a short guide for distributors and OEM buyers.

RatingProtectionTypical installation
IP65Dust tight, water jetsIndoor washdown, sheltered outdoor
IP66Dust tight, powerful water jetsExposed outdoor walls
IP67Dust tight, temporary immersionPits with occasional standing water

Three checks before you order

  1. Ratings do not stack. A product tested to IP67 is not automatically IP66-rated. Ask which grade was tested and request the test report.

  2. The rating holds only in the tested configuration — gasket intact, cover torqued to specification, entries sealed with the correct glands. One open knockout is enough to break it.

  3. Match the grade to the installation. Specifying higher than required adds cost, not service life.

Material matters as much as the number. ABS is cost-effective indoors; for exposed outdoor use, specify polycarbonate (PC) or a UV-stabilised grade — by grade name, not just "plastic".

ZCEBOX supplies plastic junction boxes and distribution enclosures with CE, RoHS and REACH compliance, produced under ISO 9001. We support OEM/ODM custom moulding, fast prototyping, small-batch runs and stock replenishment.

General-purpose enclosures for ordinary indoor and outdoor installations — not designed for explosive atmospheres.

Tell us your installation environment and expected volume, and we will confirm the right grade for your market.
