ABS or Polycarbonate? Choosing the Right Plastic for Outdoor Enclosures

Oct. 15, 2026

The material you specify decides how an enclosure looks and performs after three summers in the sun. This is how distributors and OEM buyers should decide.

MaterialStrengthsWatch-outs
ABSGood stiffness and impact resistance at low cost; moulds fine detail wellWithout UV stabilisation it discolours and embrittles outdoors
Polycarbonate (PC)Much higher impact strength; far better weathering; can be supplied transparentHigher cost; more sensitive to assembly stress and to certain chemicals
PC/ABS blendMiddle ground for indoor and sheltered outdoor productsPerformance depends on the blend ratio — always ask for the grade

Three rules for a defensible decision

  1. Decide by installation, not by price. Indoors or under cover, ABS is usually the economic choice. Exposed to sun, rain or impact risk, specify PC or a UV-stabilised grade.

  2. Ask for the grade, not the family. "Plastic" is not a specification. Request the grade reference, the UV-stabilisation status and the flame class in writing.

  3. Check the documents before you approve the sample. Material certificates and ageing data should be available at that stage — not after the first field complaint.

ZCEBOX moulds plastic junction boxes and distribution enclosures in-house, with CE, RoHS and REACH compliance produced under ISO 9001. We help OEM/ODM customers select material, colour and flame class, develop custom moulds, and supply standard sizes from stock.

General-purpose enclosures for ordinary indoor and outdoor installations — not designed for explosive atmospheres.

Send us your installation environment and expected volume, and we will recommend the material that fits.
